Socceroos face japan or uzbekistan in asian cup next round

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Socceroos head coach Ange Postecoglou on Wednesday will seek a final agreement for Wednesday's crucial Asian Cup qualifier against Japan on Sept. 15.

Postecoglou is aware of several possible Asian Cup teams that play in the upcoming round, including Japan and the United States, but will prefer to face the world's top-ranked team in the coming rounds, especially given the fact that the Socceroos already lost at home to the U.S. team.

"Obviously it's difficult when you're losing in your home stadium, but we know there are a lot of games left," Postecoglou said.

"At the same time, a draw would be very difficult for us, but if one (Asian Cup) qualifier is played there, as is all the time, we have to be really careful because we might not have enough strength to reach this round."

U.S. captain Michael Bradley — who started against the Japanese in his second Asian Cup game earlier this year — is playing his 100th club game, while U.S. international Jurgen Klinsmann is in charge of the final at Jingu in southern Japan.

"Klins is very comfortable in these conditions. That means a draw," Postecoglou added. "That's very likely.

"I can't guarantee him. It could be anybody. But at least one is playing, so that means something. It's also difficult to play against the top two teams."

The Socceroos will be looking to stay unbeaten for the second time in a row, a feat that started back in the early 1990s and is a rarity in modern-day Asian Cup qualifying.

Japan has been beaten in their last two qualifying matches against the United States, and Postecoglou said he'd like to see that trend continue.

"Japan has an excellent record," the Socceroos coach said. "I've played Japan with different players here in Australia (before, when they were a "tournament club") but this time will also be tough."

Japan will likely seek to keep its streak of drawing matches in the Asia Cup alive, especially with the Asian Nations Cup and the International Champions Cup also on the horizon.

"I believe Japan has a very good track record. We beat them twice and they won't stop there," Postecoglou added. "I believe there's still a place for Japan at the Asian Cup."

The Socceroos will face Japan at Jingu at 7 p.m. Pacific on Thursday, Sept. 13, on the same field as the game agains
